The average plastic heating oil tank has a lifespan of approximately 10-15 years. After such time your tank is at a greater risk of failure, despite this most heating oil users are unsure of the age of their tank and maybe unaware of their responsibilities when it comes to maintaining their oil storage
Older single skinned tanks positioned in direct sunlight are particularly susceptible to damage from the sun bleaching. Inspect the colour of your tank regularly if this problem occurs areas of your tank will start to change from a dark to a light green which causes a weakness in the tanks weight bearing pressure points and if worsens can cause cracks resulting in the fuel leaking
Having your oil tank regularly checked and having it assessed as part of your annual boiler service should limit your risk to failure.
